Bill Beck Field
The site of Rhode Island's home games since the founding of the institution in 1892, Beck Field, named after Rhode Island's long-time head baseball coach, assistant football, and assistant basketball coach, was dedicated in 1966. Bill Beck Field underwent some major renovations over the past several years, making it one of the finest playing surfaces in New England. Three years ago the project included removing and disposing the existing infield turf, leveling the diamond and its three-foot perimeter, adding 90 cubic yards of clay for the pitchers mound and home plate areas and installing 11,000 square feet of new turf. Contractors also installed a new sprinkler system and a permanent electrical line to the press box. Two years ago, "The Beck" lost two bunker-like dugouts that were replaced with state of the art benches. Last year, a state-of-the-art scoreboard was erected in right field.
The total cost of the renovations approached $50,000 with fundraising provided by the Ram Slam Club, the URI Athletic Department and the URI Department of Facilities and Operations.
