Lauren Anderson, who is in her 31st year with the University of Rhode Island athletic department, was promoted to Senior Associate Director of Athletics in 2003 after serving as the Associate Director since 1992.

Anderson is responsible for the coordination and supervision of intercollegiate sports, along with overseeing the sports medicine staff, the academic advisors for student-athletes, and the athletic operations staff.

Anderson came to Kingston in 1977 as the first full-time head coach for the women's cross country, indoor track & field programs. In 1992 she was appointed Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator.

Anderson has been very active with several professional organizations and has served on numerous committees in addition to her day-to-day duties in the athletic department.

She was a member of the NCAA Men's and Women's Track & Field Committee from 1992-98, including service as the chair from 1994-97.

The Eastford, Conn. native also served in the NCAA Division I Strategic Planning Cabinet (1997-99), Atlantic 10 Conference Championship Review Committee, Atlantic 10 Conference Men's and Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Committee (1993-present), and was the vice president of the ECAC Executive Council (1997-98).

Anderson served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators from 1999-2003 and has been the president of the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics For Women from 1999-2005. She is a member of the University's Association for Professional and Academic Women and President's Commission on the Status of Women.

She started her career in athletics as a physical education teacher and coach at North Haven High School in North Haven, Conn. Anderson coached the girls' track & field team for ten years, capturing four state championship titles from 1972-75. She also served as the girls' basketball coach (1967-74) and field hockey coach (1967-68). She earned her "National Umpire" rating in field hockey and officiated collegiate and international matches between 1967-1977.

In 1975, Anderson became North Haven High's Athletic Director, the first female to serve in that capacity in the state.
