Phone: (401)874-5710 Gina Sperry currently serves as Academic Advisor/Learning Specialist for Men's Basketball and Men's Track & Field squads. Since her arrival at Rhode Island in September 2002, Sperry has also worked with the Gymnastics, Soccer, Swimming, Softball, Rowing, and Women's Basketball teams. In addition to her academic work with student-athletes, Sperry is committed to assisting student-athletes overall development. She currently serves as the Coordinator for the Rhody Life Skills Program. She has served on the URI Office of Student Life's Health Promotion Committee and was part of URI's team that attended the Student Summit Promoting Responsible Celebrations. Sperry also teaches an athletic-interest section of URI 101, a freshman seminar that introduces new students to URI and campus life. Prior to her arrival at Rhode Island, Sperry was an Academic Coordinator and Coordinator of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program at Arizona State University. While in Tempe she developed programming to enhance student-athlete well-being in such areas as study skills, career planning, health & wellness, and leadership & character. Her CHAMPS/Life Skills program was honored in 2000 with a Program of Excellence Award by the NCAA Division I Athletic Directors' Association. Sperry also served as a Life Skills Coordinator at the University of New Hampshire prior to her stint at Arizona State. Sperry moved into academic advising and life skills enhancement following a successful career as a collegiate cross country and track & field coach. She was the head coach of the University of New Hampshire's Women's Track & Field/Cross Country team from 1992 to 1999. While at New Hampshire, Sperry was named the American East Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1997. Prior to her tenure at New Hampshire, she was the Head Women's Cross Country and Assistant Women's Track & Field Coach at the University of Vermont from 1988 to 1992. Sperry twice earned North Atlantic Conference Cross Country Coach of the Years honors while at Vermont. Sperry earned her B.S. in physical education (coach specialization) from Eastern Illinois University in 1983 and her M.S. in physical education (adult fitness and cardiac rehabilitation) in 1984. During her own athletic career, Sperry was a national-class distance runner. She was a National Amateur Champion at 10-kilometers in 1986. Sperry also qualified for the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the Marathon and finished 18th at the 1986 Boston Marathon. Sperry resides in Newport, R.I. |
