Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island baseball team dropped an 8-2 decision to Temple, Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. With the victory, the Owls earned the series sweep while Rhody dropped to 0-3 in Atlantic 10 play.

Temple (10-7, 3-0 Atlantic 10) took advantage of two first-inning errors by URI and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in its first trip to the plate.

The Rams got one back in the bottom of the second when Temple's Mike Mongiardini drilled sophomore Rob Deveney (Marlton, N.J.) and then gave up back-to-back singles to sophomore Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.) and senior Shaun Hagey (Ephrata, Pa.) to load the bases for sophomore John Rusin (East Amherst, N.Y.), who used a sac fly to center field to plate Deveney and make the score 3-1.

Temple added another run in the top of the third before senior Zach Zaneski (Waterford, Conn.) extended his hitting streak to eight games on a double to right center that moved sophomore Zoey Angulo (Miami, Fla.) to third. Angluo then crossed the plate to score URI's final run of the game on sophomore Oliver Palmer's (North Kingstown, R.I.) ground out to second base.

Rhode Island (6-12, 0-3 Atlantic 10) would strand five more runners through the remainder of the game, while the Owls scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the top of the eighth for the 8-2 win.

Sophomore starter Nick Greenwood (Southington, Conn.) lasted six innings and struck out eight batters while walking just one, but was charged with the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits. Mongiardini, who was responsible for both Rhody runs, allowed six hits and fanned seven hits to earn the win.

The Rams are back in action Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to Northeastern for a 3 p.m. game.
