Zaneski Named Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week
May 12, 2008
KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island's Zach Zaneski (Waterford, Conn.) was named Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week on Monday, May 12. The honor follows a 2-1 weekend for the Rams where Zaneski recorded five hits - including a homerun - four RBI and two runs. The senior catcher, who was presented with the team's 2008 Rick Ligi MVP Award on Saturday afternoon, belted a solo shot before driving in the winning run in Sunday's victory over UMass, extending his hitting streak to seven games and recording his 20th multiple-hit performance this season. He also threw out two base stealers and added a pickoff in the three-game conference series. Zaneski currently ranks among the best in the A-10 in nearly every offensive category and leads the team with a .369 batting average, 69 hits, 42 runs, 35 RBI, 16 doubles, a .513 slugging percentage and a .457 on-base percentage. Defensively, he paces the team with 386 putouts and leads the A-10, having caught 24 attempted base stealers. He also is one of 48 Division I student-athletes in the running for the 2008 Johnny Bench Award - which is presented annually to the nation's top catcher. Zaneski and the Rams return to action tomorrow afternoon for a noon-time doubleheader at Northeastern.
