Coaching: Kevin Clark was named to coach Jim Baron's staff at Rhode Island on Aug. 4, 2004. The Stamford, Conn., native joined the coaching ranks in 1982 and has gained valuable experience working at five different schools in the mid-Atlantic region over the past 22 years. The 46-year old coach will be returning to New England and will be serving his second stint as an assistant in the Atlantic 10 Conference. "Kevin is a terrific teacher of the game and is an excellent recruiter," Baron said. "He has familiarity with the Atlantic 10 from his days at George Washington and has experience running a high-profile program in the Big East Conference at St. John's. We are pleased to have someone of his character and coaching experience join the Rhode Island basketball staff." As associate head coach for the Red Storm from 1998-03, he helped lead St. John's to a 114-78 (.594) overall mark and the 2003 NIT crown. As an assistant, he coordinated the Red Storm recruiting efforts and was instrumental in the day-to-day operation of the basketball program. Clark was elevated to interim head coach of the Red Storm on Dec. 20, 2003 following the departure of head coach Mike Jarvis. He coached St. John's for the remainder of the 2003-04 season. Subsequent to coming to St. John's, Clark was an assistant coach at Atlantic 10 rival George Washington working with Jarvis from 1993-97. The Colonials compiled a 78-45 (.634) record during that span. During that time, the Colonials had their best record in school history (24-9, for a winning percentage of .727), were Atlantic 10 co-champions twice and advanced to the NCAA tournament's field of 64 on two occasions. Prior to working at George Washington, the personable coach assisted head coach Paul Cormier at Fairfield, from 1991-94 where he was responsible for the team's recruiting efforts, developing scouting reports and game coaching strategy. From 1987-91, he was the head coach at his alma mater, Clark, where the team captured the Division III Northeast Regional Championship, compiling a 20-7 record in 1987-88. He was an assistant Clark from 1984-87 where also served double duty as head men's and women's track coach. He began his coaching career at Holy Cross where he served as an assistant coach for the Crusaders in 1982-83. Clark starred as an All-American basketball star at Clark in the late 70's and early 80's. He still holds career records for rebounds (1,447), rebounding average (14.4) and field goal percentage, connecting on 60 percent for his career. The three-time All-American selection is also the school's fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,605 points. On January 28, 1995, Clark was enshrined into the Clark Athletic Hall of Fame. He earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from Clark in 1981. In Sept. 2003, Clark was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, which is located in Kingston, R.I. just a few yards from the Ryan Center. Clark and his wife, Robin, are the parents of two children, a son, Korey, and a daughter, Kyla. |
