John Gendron begins his fourth season on the football staff at the University of Rhode Island. He joined the Rams staff following two seasons as linebackers coach at Bridgewater State College. He will served as an offensive assistant in 2008.

Gendron worked as offensive line coach in 2006 and 2007 and was also responsible for monitoring the academic progress of the student-athletes. Despite a number of key injuries to the offensive line in 2007, the Rams managed to finish third in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and 14th in the NCAA in rushing yards per game (229.9). Fullback Joe Casey was named to the CAA First Team after rushing for 782 yards in eight games before suffering a season-ending injury.

In 2006, the Rams finished second in rushing in the Atlantic 10 with an average of 192.1 yards per game, led by Casey with 874 yards. For his efforts, he earned his second-consecutive First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection.

While at Bridgewater State, the Bears cut their points per game allowed from 30.4 in 2003 to 17.4 in 2004 - Gendron's first season. The following year, Bridgewater ranked 15th in Division III in rush defense (88.0 ypg) and 20th in scoring defense (15.5 ppg) en route to a 9-1 record and the ECAC Northeast Championship.

A health and physical education teacher at East Providence High School since 1986, Gendron has extensive high school coaching experience at both East Providence High School and Seekonk High School. Serving as offensive coordinator, he helped East Providence win back-to-back state championships in 2002 and 2003.

Prior to his arrival at East Providence, Gendron served as an assistant coach at his high school alma mater, Seekonk, from 1983-86 and again from 1991-94. A 1999 inductee into the Seekonk High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Gendron played quarterback for Seekonk, earning Southeastern Massachusetts Conference All-League honors in 1977.

A 1982 graduate of URI with a degree in health and physical education, Gendron was a four-year reserve quarterback for the Rams. In 1996, he earned his Masters Degree in physical education from Ball State, who ironically enough, was Rutgers' opponent in URI head coach Darren Rizzi's final game in the scarlet and white this past January.
