KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomore quarterback D.J. Stefkovich threw three touchdown passes - including two to junior Nick Del Grosso - to lead the URI White team to a 31-17 win over the URI Keaney Blue team in the University of Rhode Island's annual Spring Game Saturday afternoon at Meade Stadium.

Stefkovich (Westport, Conn.) finished the afternoon 15-for-24 for 227 yards to lead the Rams' quarterbacks, who split time playing for both teams.

Senior quarterback Derek Cassidy (Winter Haven, Fla.) opened the scoring with a 34-yard touchdown run to give the keaney team a 7-0 lead, but the white team answered with a 35-yard field goal by redshirt sophomore Pedro Belinchon (Maspalomas, Canary Islands) to cut the deficit to 7-3 at the end of 15 minutes of action.

Sophomore Terence Glenn (Ashburn, Va.) made one of the most spectacular plays of the afternoon in the second quarter for the white team, stripping sophomore back Anthony Ferrer (West Greenwich, R.I.) and scampering 40 yards for a touchdown to give the white squad a 10-7 lead. Stefkovich's first touchdown pass to Del Grosso - a 35-yard scoring strike - stretched the lead to 17-7 entering halftime.

In the third, Stefkovich gave the white squad a 24-7 lead as he hooked up with Del Grosso for a 31-yard scoring pass. Later in the stanza, Belinchon booted a 34-yard field goal for the keaney team to make it a 24-10 game, and a 39-yard pass from Stefkovich to Bellini early in the fourth brought the keaney team to within a touchdown at 24-17.

Freshman back Michael Okunfolami (Providence, R.I.) - a transfer from La Salle Academy - restored the white team's two-touchdown lead at 31-17 with a three-yard scoring run with under two minutes remaining in the contest. He finished with a game-high 66 rushing yards.

Cassidy - who started 10 of 11 games for the Rams last season - finished the afternoon 11-of-23 for 147 yards passing and 35 yards rushing on 12 carries. Del Grosso finished with a game-high 97 receiving yards while Bellini caught four passes for 80 yards. Redshirt sophomore John Monk (Providence, R.I.) had a game-high seven receptions for 69 yards while junior Blake Zundel (Marion, Iowa) - a transfer from the University of Iowa who had never played receiver at the collegiate level - hauled in four passes for 46 yards. Both played for the white team.

Following the contest, first-year head coach Darren Rizzi handed our three spring awards. Sophomore defensive tackle Willie McGinnis (Norwich, N.Y.) was presented with the Most Improved Defensive Player Award, and on offense, senior David Wilson (Warwick, R.I) - who was moved from defense to tight end this spring - received Most Improved Player honors. The third award Rizzi presented - the inaugural Ram Pride Award - went to junior Rob Damon (Piscataway, N.J.).

The Rams will participate in their annual Autism Walk Sunday afternoon, April 27, at Goddard Park in Warwick at 10 a.m.
