TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of Rhode Island golf team sits in 17th place after the opening round of the Ron Smith Invitational today, contested at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club (par 72, 7,084 yards) in Dade City, Fla.

The Rams are playing without senior Jarryd Dillas, who suffered a foot injury prior to today's competition. He will likely be out for the second and third rounds of action.

Leading the way for Rhody is Mark Stevens, who shot an opening-round 71 (-1) - good for a share of 4th place overall. Rafael Campos of VCU sits atop the leaderboard, after a round of 65 (-7).

Brad Valois is tied for 25th, firing a first-round 74 (+2) this afternoon, followed by Patrick Pelletier's 79 (+7), which puts him in a tie for 76th. Bill Forcier rounds out the URI golfers with a round of 80 (+8).

URI totalled 304 on the day, just one stroke behind 15th place (303). Just eight strokes separate the teams from 7th-18th place.

The second and third rounds will be contested on Saturday, March 1.
