ACHA #1 Rams maintain dominance over #2 Penn State with 7-1 road win

Jan. 14, 2005

Returning to Happy Valley with hopes of maintaining their top ranking in the ACHA, the Rams also had to finish business from last season when the team suffered a 7-2 loss to the then #1 Icers. A year later, the Rams came in as the #1 team and proved Friday night that they were worthy of their top ACHA ranking by extending their record to 25-1-1.

The Rams drew first blood in the first period as Matt Loftus opened the game's scoring to put the Rams ahead 1-0. Chris Brennan then scored his first goal of the game with 1:09 left in the first period, to extend the Rams lead to 2-0. With the Rams leading 2-0 in the second period, Penn State shortened the lead to 2-1 at the midpoint of the period. A number of Icer penalties helped the Rams to reestablish a two-goal lead as Chris Brennan connected on his second goal of the game on a power-play set-up from Mark Soltys and John Brennan as the Rams led 3-1.

The flood gates opened as the Rams scored their third power play goal in the second period as Matt Loftus scored his second goal at 12:57 on another power-play goal to give the Rams a 4-1 lead. Tyler Reinhardt scored the Rams fifth goal from from Brandon Kape and Anthony Randazzo late in the second period, to give the Rams a four-goal lead, 5-1. Scott Eberenz then scored low from Matt Loftus and Mike Curran to put the Rams up 6-1 with 1:03 remaining in the second period, just 15 seconds after Reinhardt's goal. Going into the locker room for the second intermission, the Rams had outshot Penn State 13-7, and had a commanding 6-1 lead.

Anthony Randazzo scored early in the third period, unassisted, to put the Rams ahead for good at 7-1. Throughout the third period, the Rams maintained a strong forechecking presence that did not allow the Icers to form any effective offense. By the end of the game, the Rams had outshot Penn State 29-17, and made an impressive statement with such a dominant victory over the Icers in Happy Valley.

Both teams meet again Saturday to complete their season series at the Penn State Ice Pavillion. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
