ACHA #1 Rams come up short in 4-3 loss to #2 Penn State

Jan. 15, 2005

John Brennan opened the game's scoring at 1:20 as he finished the play to put the Rams ahead 1-0.  Defenseman Jason May extended the Rams lead to 2-0 at 8:08 in the first period.  The Rams were held scoreless during the second period, and Penn State managed to score twice to even the game up going into the third period, 2-2.

Both teams started the third period shorthanded.  Playing four a side, PSU scored early in the third on a shot only 13 seconds into the period.  A Penn State forward shot the puck toward the net and it deflected off Rams defenseman Jason May past goaltender Anthony Feyock to put the Icers ahead 3-2.  Penn State then extended the lead 4-2 as a well-placed shot beat Feyock high at 3:39 in the third period.

The Rams applied consistent pressure throughout the third period attempting to narrow the gap and managed to do it with 32 seconds left as Matt Loftus scored on a set up from Matt Ranger as the Rams pulled Anthony Feyock to put out the extra attacker.  With the score at 3-2, the Icers managed to hold the Rams off to secure the victory, but not before the players on the ice became involved in a brief melee that was quickly broken up, and both teams shook hands to end an intense weekend series.

The Rams finish the regular season series with the Icers 2-1-1.  The next time the two teams could meet would be at the ACHA National tournament in March.  The Rams travel home to prepare for two home games against ECHA opponent West Virginia University on Friday, January 21, and Saturday, January 22.  Both games take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Boss Ice Arena on the URI Kingston campus.
