BALTIMORE - Rhode Island men's soccer standout Geoffrey Cameron (Attleboro, Mass.) was selected in the third round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, held Jan. 18 in Baltimore, Md. Cameron was the 42nd overall pick, going to the reigning MLS Champion Houston Dynamo.

For the Rams, it marks the second consecutive year that a Rhody player has been drafted as Jeffrey Gonsalves was selected 40th overall last season by Toronto FC.

"Wow, this is amazing," said Cameron. "I really wasn't expecting it. I mean, its something I've dreamed about since I was a little kid but to have your dream come true like this - its just very overwhelming!"

Cameron, a 2007 NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Region First Team selection, received the Atlantic 10 Conference's inaugural Midfielder of the Year award this season, after tallying two goals and three assists. He also earned Preseason All-Conference honors.

"We couldn't be more excited for Geoff right now," commented head coach John O'Connor. "He has done great things for us here at URI and I'm confident that he will continue to excel with his soccer career. And I know that this is extra special for him because his grandfather, who recently passed away, was his #1 fan and always wanted to see him make it to the next level."

For Cameron, the first step was being one of just 54 Division I seniors invited to the 2008 adidas/MLS Combine, which took place at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, Jan. 11-15.

"My Pops and I were really, really close. He always went to my games and supported me, so I made a promise to him that I would continue to play and make him proud," explained Cameron. "Its difficult not being able to share this excitement with him, but I know he's looking down on me and smiling right now."

Cameron, who spent his freshman and sophomore years at West Virginia, transferred to Rhode Island to finish his eligibility with the Rams. In his first season at URI, he made an immediate impact in the Rhody midfield, recording 14 points (4g, 6a) and finishing the season third in the Atlantic 10 with 52 shots. An All-Conference honorable mention, he also was named to the 2006 Atlantic 10 All-Championship Team and went on to earn College Soccer News National Team of the Week honors after recording an assist and netting his shot in the PK shootout to help URI defeat Rutgers in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

"He is a good running midfielder. He is athletic, and is strong with the ball. He is exactly the type of player we are looking for," said Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear.

A 2004 graduate of Providence Country Day, Cameron was a two-time All-New England honoree and was a Regional Team/Pool Player/Top 24 for three years.

He is the son of Diane and Scott Cameron, who reside in Attleboro, Mass.

Houston opens the 2008 regular season on Saturday, March 29, against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. For more on the Dynamo, click here.
