Borman and Tumicz Picked Up by MLS Teams
Jan. 25, 2008
KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island men's soccer players Danleigh Borman (Cape Town, South Africa) and Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland) join classmate Geoffrey Cameron (Attleboro, Mass.) as the second and third members of the URI men's soccer program to be drafted by MLS teams this season. Borman was the seventh overall pick in the supplemental draft, going to the New York Red Bulls while Tumicz went 34th, to the Columbus Crew. Cameron was selected 42nd overall by reigning MLS champion Houston Dynamo in last week's SuperDraft. "I'm really happy for these guys," said URI head coach John O'Connor. "They're all very deserving of these opportunities and have continued to train since our season ended in November, so I think that they are well-prepared for what lies ahead of them. It will be exciting to follow them through this next chapter in their lives. I know that they'll all do great things with their soccer careers." Borman, a 2007 Preseason All-Conference player and Atlantic 10 Second Team selection, finished his senior campaign tied for second in the league with seven assists. He also tallied one goal - a game-winner - for a total of nine points on the season. "This is very exciting," said Borman. "And I just thank God and my family and my teammates for this opportunity, because I know that I wouldn't be where I am today without all of their support." Last year, the Rhody midfielder was named the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship Most Outstanding Player and earned spots on the College Soccer News and Soccer America National Teams of the Week after recording a goal and an assist to help URI claim the A-10 title. As a freshman, he earned the league's Rookie of the Year award. Borman finished his collegiate career with 30 points (7g, 16a) and tied for fourth all-time at URI with 83 games played. Prior to coming to Rhode Island, he was a member of the U-19 South African National Team (at the age of 17) as well as the Santos FC Academy. Tumicz, who represented URI at the 2008 MLS Combine, led the A-10 this season with 27 points on a conference-best 12 goals and three assists. He recorded either a goal or an assist in 11 of Rhode Island's 18 games and was second in the league with three game-winning tallies. As a junior, the Rams' forward ranked 14th in the nation with 0.48 assists per game and also led the Atlantic 10 in assists (10) while finishing second in the league (to former teammate Jeffrey Gonsalves) in total points (24), points per game (1.14) and goals (7). He was a clutch player for the Rams throughout the 2006 post-season, scoring a goal in URI's 2-0 win over Saint Louis in the A-10 Championship game, recording an assist in a 1-1 tie with Rutgers in the NCAA Tournament First Round and netting his PK shot to help URI advance to the Second Round - where he scored the game's first goal in a 1-1 tie with 16th-seeded Lehigh. "Being drafted is a goal you set for yourself before you really even realize what it takes to get there," explained Tumicz. "The long road trips, the times when you could have scored the game-winning goal but didn't, training when you were exhausted and then making up classes, exams and schoolwork - all of the hard work is worth it when you get an opportunity like this. And its even better when you can share it two of your teammates!" Tumicz, who also was a member of the U-15 and U-16 Polish National Teams, ended his collegiate career tied at #8 on URI's All-Time Scoring list with 86 career points (31g, 24a). In assists alone, he finished fifth all-time and is tied for ninth in career goals. A two-time All-Conference selection, Tumicz earned three preseason All-Conference honors, two Player of the Week awards and was named to the 2005 Atlantic 10 All-Championship team. While at Rhode Island, both Borman and Tumicz helped lead the Rams to two NCAA Tournaments, two Atlantic 10 Championship titles (2005, 2006) and one A-10 Regular Season Championship title (2005). For URI, it marks the second-consecutive year that Rhody players have been drafted as Gonsalves was selected 40th overall last season by Toronto FC.
