Men's Soccer Announces Spring Schedule

Lukasz Tumicz's MLS Training Camp Journal

Hello Everyone...

First, I would like to say Hi to everyone - especially to my former teammates!  Sorry it's been so long since I've updated this blog - I've been a pretty busy guy over the past few months...

For those of you who don't know, I have signed a three-year contract with a Division One team from Poland called Jagiellonia Bialystok. You can check out the website by clicking here - but you might want to brush up on your Polish before doing so! :)

Things happened so quickly that sometimes I can't imagine how I went from the MLS combine to getting drafted by Columbus Crew and then finally ending up back in my mother land - Poland.

While training with Columbus in Bradenton, FL, I met a lot of great people and it was definitely a great experience for me. One of the people who influenced my decision about leaving USA and trying out in Poland is Tomasz Frankowski. Currently, Tomasz is playing for the Chicago Fire and previously played in both England and Spain. He helped me with organizing a try-out with Jagiellonia - which I thought would be a great place to start my professional career.

From there, things happened pretty quickly... I arrived in Bialystok and the next day I had my first training. It was an easy session because the team had just returned from a road trip and it was a regeneration day for them.

The next day, the head coach Artur Platek had me do some finishing and technical drills as well as a fitness test. I think I did really well during that session but the real try out was about to come. I was told that I was going to play a game with the reserves (second team) so I knew that in order to stay with the team I would have to play well. I was under a lot of pressure but I tried not to show it on the field.

As soon as the game started, I forgot about everything and I kind of just "did my thing". I scored two goals in that game and I also added two assists... we ended up winning 6-2. Afterwards, the head coach came up to me and told me that he wanted to keep me with the team... I can't even describe what I felt. It was the best feeling ever! The next day I met with the president of the team and agreed to sign a 3 year contract with Jagiellonia Bialystok.

So, I have been with the team for almost a month now and have seen action in three games (out of four). I haven't scored yet but hopefully I'll put my name on the scoreboard soon enough!

Here is a link to our schedule - it might be the only thing on our website that you'll actually be able to understand (hopefully?) - so now you can keep up to date with my team!

Anyway, in addition to playing, I have been working a lot with younger teams as well as Jagiellonia's medical staff because I am still doing my internship.  The other cool thing is that I'm only four hours from my hometown (Bisztynek) so for the first time in six years I actually had a chance to spend Easter at home with my family. It was really exciting!

Before I sign off, I would like to wish the best of luck to all URI student-athletes (especially, the men's soccer team). Hopefully I will see you all when I come back in May!

Oh, I almost forgot. My team got invited to Chicago! We are playing the Fire on May 30th - so start making plans to come and support me! :)

Check back here soon too, I'm going to do my best to add updates whenever I get a chance to!

Well, the last two days we've had double sessions which have been pretty tough. We use heart monitors when we train, so they are able to pull info on each individual player and see how hard we are pushing ourselves when we're doing all the different drills - shooting, technique, possession, etc. They monitor out heart rate through everything we do - so if you slack even just a little bit - they know!

At first, it was so different for me, because I'm not used to someone being able to track that sort of info but I've come to really love it because it holds everyone accountable. There's no time or patience messing around - if you come to work, do your job and give 100% and you are ok.

For some people though, the data showed that their heart rate wasn't high enough and as a consequence, they had to do extra fitness stuff afterwards. Fortunately, I wasn't one of these people - so that was a good thing because I've been playing right midfield and its quite a bit more running that what I'm used to as a striker!

Yesterday we did a lot of shooting drills. I really like how structured things are... everything that we do is very organized and very intense.

We're on a 4-5 day cycle with one light day (today), which is called "Regeneration Day"... its pretty much a day to just rest and relax our muscles. We met at 9:30 this morning for a 45 minute jog/stretch and they want us all to get to the pool and/or hot tub at some point during the day today. So basically we have the day to ourselves until tonight, when we have a meeting with MLS officials.

Well, that's all I've got for now. We have our first pre-season match coming up on Friday, so wish me luck!

I'm baaaaaaaack! :)

As some of you probably know, after the MLS Combine I was drafted by the Columbus Crew. I found out that they selected me on Jan. 24 and just nine days later I was on a plane to training camp in Bradenton, FL. There are a total of 37 players here, but the final roster will be narrowed down to 28 guys - 18 senior players and 10 developmental - so everyone is giving 110% just trying to prove themselves and earn one of those roster spots. So, needless to say, the training has been pretty intense.

The first day, I was up at 4AM to fly down here. Once I got here, there were physicals, meetings and a light training session which was mostly just jogging, stretching and a little 4v2.

We train at the IMG Soccer Academy, which is home to the US Under 17 National Team. DC United and the Kansas City Wizards are here too, so we've been able to watch them a little. Actually, my Combine roommate - Ryan Corderio from UConn - is here with DC United, as is Dan Stratford from West Virginia, so its been pretty cool to catch up with them!

Speaking of roommates, I am sharing a condo here with two other players - Emmanuel, who is 20 and from Nigeria, and Zola, who was a senior a Virginia. We get some money for food and can cook if we want, but lunch and dinner are usually team meals so we're really only on our own for breakfast.

We have double sessions every day - first at 10AM and then again at 4PM. Yesterday we did beep testing in the morning, which I thought went ok - I did alright but I know that my fitness is something I need to improve upon. The afternoon session was a little tougher. We did a lot of fitness drills with the ball (limited running) and played little games.

All of the coaches are great, but one of the coolest things for me has been the opportunity to meet Robert Warzycha - who is one of the assistant coaches here. He is from Poland and I grew up watching him play for the Polish National Team so it was kid of surreal today when I was out on the field playing against him. We spoke a little Polish too, so that was awesome!

Well, that's all for now - I'll check back in soon!
