BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Rhode Island men's indoor track & field team placed second at the New England Championships Saturday afternoon at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center. Connecticut won the event with 168 points while the Rams finished with 72 points.

Freshman David Kennedy (Essex Junction, Vt.) led the Rams on Saturday with a first-place finish in the 500m dash (1:03.04). Senior Ryan McCarthy (Worcester, Mass.) earned a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 52-06.75 while, in the 55m hurdles, junior Alexander Reid (Middletown, N.Y.) placed fourth with a time of 7.67.

In the long jump, sophomore Michael Russell (Preston, Conn.) placed sixth with a jump of 22-03.50. Junior Shawn Leonard (Stoughton, Mass.), meanwhile, finished in a three-way tie for sixth in the high jump (6-06.25)

Sophomore Michael Bland (Long Branch, N.J.) placed sixth in the 55m dash (6.43) and seventh in the 200m dash (22.11). Freshman Manuel Richards (Fair Haven, Vt.) finished 10th in the heptathlon with 4,156 points.

In the pole vault on Friday, junior John Carstensen (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a vault of 15-09.00, which placed him second, while senior Sean Strizzi (Latham, N.Y.) also recorded a vault of 15-09.00. Through a tiebreaker, he was credited with a third-place finish. Freshman Shuuzabaio Kida (Essex Junction, Vt.) was sixth with a vault of 13-03.00.

On Friday, senior Michael Bernardo (South Attleboro, Mass.) placed second in the weight throw (58-03.25) and sophomore Derek Peterson (Northwood, N.H.) was 10th (53-00.00). In the heptathlon, sophomore James Whalen (Sinking Spring, Pa.) notched a third-place finish with 2,609 points.

The Rams also took fourth in the 4x400m relay (3:17.48), seventh in the 4x800m relay (7:46.00), and 10th in the distance medley (10:15.34) at the meet.

URI returns to action on March 8 when it competes in the IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass.
