KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island gymnastics team edged the University of Bridgeport 187.750-187.000 Saturday afternoon at Mackal Field House. The Rams held a fundraiser during the event to help raise money for leukemia and lymphoma research.

URI opened the meet on the vault and posted a score of 47.800, which bested the Purple Knights' tally of 46.700. Sophomore Ananda Fraser (Diego Martin, Trinidad) led the Rams with a score of 9.700 while senior Erica Heaney (North Plainfield, N.J.) finished second in the event with as score of 9.650.

On the bars, URI tallied a 47.325 to Bridgeport's 46.525 as senior Emily Rinaldo (Beverly, Mass.) and freshman Danielle Riportella (Great River, N.Y.) tied for first-place with a score of 9.675.

The Purple Knights won the beam by a score of 46.400-45.550. Riportella led the Rams with a score of 9.425 while senior Casey Pereira (Ashland, Mass.) scored a 9.350. Bridgeport also picked up a win on the floor exercise, 47.375-47.075. Fraser again led URI with a score of 9.700.

Riportella won the all-around competition with a score of 38.200, ahead of Bridgeport's Lorraine Galllow (37.800) and Stephanie Morgan (36.725).

The Rams conclude the 2008 home season this Friday, March 7, when they host Southern Connecticut, Yale, and MIT. The event is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
