KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island gymnastics team defeated Southern Connecticut, Yale, and MIT to win its final home meet of the 2008 season Friday evening on Senior Night at Mackal Field House. The Rams placed first with 189.000 points, followed by Yale (185.775), Southern Connecticut (182.575), and MIT (177.225).

Sophomore Ananda Fraser (Diego Martin, Trinidad) won the vault with a score of 9.700 while freshman Danielle Riportella (Great River, N.Y.) captured second-place with a 9.650.

Riportella placed first on the bars with a score of 9.770, followed by senior Emily Rinaldo (Beverly, Mass.) in third-place with a 9.550. Senior Erica Heaney (North Plainfield, N.J.) received the Rams' third-highest score (9.500).

Sophomore Danielle Lee (Windsor Locks, Conn.) led the Rams on the beam, posting a 9.650, which tied her for second place. Classmate Alex Tirado (Bechtelsville, Pa.) received URI's second-best score (9.500).

Rhode Island wrapped up the meet on the floor and was led by Fraser, who recorded first-place score of 9.825 while senior Jamie Reyell (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman Lindsay Diamond (Marlboro, N.J.) tied for fourth overall with a score of 9.575.

At the conclusion of the meet, all of the URI gymnasts past and present were honored for their contributions to the program. Last month, URI announced that the gymnastics program would be discontinued following the 2008 season.

The Rams return to action next Friday when they travel to Brown to meet the Bears and Southern Connecticut at 7 p.m.
