URI Gymnastics Finishes Second at ECAC Championship

Heaney Named ECAC Gymnast of the Week

Ram Gymnastics Report

February 7, 2007

Hello again Rhody Fans. I know it has been awhile, but I have decided to write and update you all on our season so far.

We started off our 2007 season at home in a quad meet with UNH, Rutgers and Yale. We had some mistakes, but that was expected with it being our first meet. We ended up placing third overall, with some of the girls taking awards on the events and all-around. We returned to the gym determined to keep progressing forward, but were unfortunately hit with the injury bug once again. With our bars specialist Kylie Tanner already out with a torn meniscus, Bridget Murphy went down with a torn achilles requiring immediate surgery. With her being out we were now down a top performer on each of the events. With an already limited roster due to girls recovering from previous injuries, or being specialists on events, it was time for all of us to step it up!

We went into our second meet against three Div. III schools, ready to not let the injuries affect us while having a fun competition. With scoring not being where it we expected it to be, and a rocky start on beam, we tried to keep our heads up the rest of the competition. Then bars came. Our freshmen all-arounder, Danielle Lee seemed to severely hyperextend her knee on her double front dismount, but after going to the doctor it was diagnosed as a torn meniscus and a fractured fibula - requiring yet another surgery and big loss for us. On a positive note, Casey Pereira was recognized by many local papers and TV stations for overcoming Hodgkin's disease and returning to competition. We are all extremely happy to have her back and she was awarded the ECAC Coaches Choice Award for all that she has accomplished.

We went into our third meet against Cornell, wanting to win at home and get through without any major injuries. We had a strong meet, besides beam, which continues to be our nemesis, and came out with a win. Emily Rinaldo, last years ECAC Champion on bars, competed a bar routine without a mount or dismount due to tendons being torn in her ankle and decided after the meet that it would be smarter to get the surgery she needed then risk injuring her ankle anymore than it already was.

With our luck seeming slim, we went into our fourth meet at Rhode Island College with Brown. It was nice to finally get the three Rhode Island teams together for a competition. Kelly Gurney again dominated the all-around, helping us to yet another win this season and securing her spot as ECAC Gymnast of the Week.

We have this next weekend off before returning to action at Yale on the 17th. We will definitely be in the gym working hard to get out the beam jitters, and polish our routines, so we can have a successful and hopefully healthy rest of the season. Mark your calendars for March 10th, as we return from our three weekends on the road to host Bridgeport in our final home meet, which will also be our senior night! Being a senior, I would love to see the stands packed with energy, as we seniors perform for the last time in front of our home crowd!
