ACHA #3 Rams finish Midwest road trip with tie, 4-4 against #4 Michigan State
Jan. 16, 2005 Coming off a 1-0 loss the night before, senior captain Jennifer Wallace put the #3 Rams in control right away as she scored on a set-up from senior defenseman Amelia Lyman and sophomore defenseman Alysa Coleman to open the game's scoring just 14 seconds into the first period. It didn't take the host #4 Michigan State Spartans too long to even the score 1-1 at 1:18. The Rams struggled for the rest of the first period, and got behind 3-1 going into the second period. With their backs against the wall early, the Rams kept building momentum until sophomore defenseman Robin Rosselle started mounting the team's comeback as she scored at 14:26 to reduce the deficit to 3-2. Alysa Coleman assisted on the play. Freshman defenseman Ashley Pagliarini followed Roselle's lead and connected on a power-play set up from Lyman and Rosselle to tie the game 3-3 at 16:46 of the second period. Pagliarini then notched her second goal of the game only nine seconds later as she put the Rams ahead 4-3 at 16:55. The Rams took the lead into the second intermission with the intent of holding on and to finish their third game in as many days with a win.
The Rams held on throughout the first half of the third period as Michigan State played catch-up which they finally did as the Spartans evened the score 4-4 at 13:58 of the third period. The two teams battled to the end of regulation and into overtime, but the game remained tied as both teams had each earned a draw. The #3 Rams completed their road trip 1-1-1 (11-9-3 overall) and got a taste of what national-level competition exists for the upcoming 2005 National tournament in March. The Rams are defending 2004 ECWHL champions and ranked #1 in the ACHA Northeast Divsion. The top two teams from each of the four divisions in the ACHA Women's section qualify for the National Tournamenent. The Rams return home Saturday, January 22 to host ECWHL opponent Bates College at Boss Arena on the URI Kingston campus. The puck drops at 4:00 p.m. |
