Rowing Races at Head of the Housatonic
SHELTON, Conn. - The University of Rhode Island women's rowing team competed at the Head of the Housatonic Saturday morning in Shelton, Connecticut.
Led by senior Whitney Phaup (Gloucester, Va.), the Rams placed third in the Women's College Division I 4+ with a time of 17:48.616. She also paced the Rams to a sixth-place finish in the Women's College Division I 8+ with a time of 16:10.840. "I was really pleased with our performance today. We have a very young team, comprised of mostly freshmen and sophomores, and our goal in the fall is to give these young kids the experience they need to be highly competitive in the spring," said head coach Shelagh Donohoe. "Our goal for this first race was not necessarily to put out the fastest line up, but rather put out even boats that would challenge each other. The top two boats were within 10 seconds of each other. This will create a competitive environment for boat selection for the Head of the Charles." The URI rowing team returns to action on Oct. 21 when it competes at the Head of the Charles in Cambridge, Mass. The race begins at 9 a.m.
