Women's Tennis
Coaching Experience: The 2007-08 academic year marks Sandy Wood's fourth season as head coach of the Rhode Island women's tennis program. Under Wood's guidance the URI Women's Tennis team has improved dramatically from an initial record of 4-16 to a last season's record of 15-6. Last season URI placed three players on the Atlantic 10 All Conference Tennis Team and the All Conference Academic team. A 1977 graduate of Dartmouth College, Wood earned a bachelor's degree in geology and mathematics. He earned four letters as a member of the school's men's tennis team and won the 1974 ECAC C Division championship. He held numerous New England junior rankings and was ranked among the top five in singles and No. 1 in doubles in New England. He continues to play in USTA Tournaments where he was recently ranked No. 1 in New England in men's over-45 doubles division. After college Wood went to New York City where he was an investment banker with Morgan Stanley. He then moved to Hanover N.H. where he started an investment advisory firm and after selling the business in 1998 he moved fulltime to Jamestown. At Saint George's he has coached both women's tennis and women's squash. Wood inherited a team that had finished 4-10 in 2000, but turned the program around, helping the team improve each year, including a 10-5-1 mark in 2004. Wood resides in Jamestown, R.I. with his wife, Bambi. The couple has two children, Brooke and Todd, who both attend Dartmouth where they compete in ski racing and squash, respectively. updated: 9/12/07 |
