BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Rhode Island women's indoor track & field team sits in second place after the first day of competition at the New England Championships at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center. The Rams have 26 points, which is three behind first-place Sacred Heart.

The Rams senior duo of Jasmine Jennings (Warwick, R.I.) and Sarah Thornton (Saugerties, N.Y.) placed first and third, respectively, in the weight throw. Jennings won the event with a throw of 61-07.75 while Thornton placed third with a throw of 59-07.40. Senior Katie Kostiew (Northwood, N.H.), meanwhile, finished 10th with a throw that went 50-04.50.

Sophomore Stephanie Gregory (Hope Valley, R.I.) - who won the pentathlon with a final point total of 3,503 - was URI's top performer in the pole vault as she cleared 10-04.00, placing her in a three-way tie for 12th. The Rams' other first place finish came in the 800m run as senior Kolleen McCauley (Red Bank, N.J.) won the event with a time of 2:13.63.

Junior Khabria Hundley (Hamden, Conn.) finished eighth in the 200m dash with a time of 25.62 while freshman Najla Singleton (Albany, N.Y.) followed in ninth-place with a time of 25.72. Later, Singleton placed fifth in the 400m dash with a time of 57.93.

Junior Natatia Nugent (Bohemia, N.Y.) scored the Rams' best time in the 500m dash as she placed 12th with a time of 1:18.05. In the 1000m run, Senior Lindsay Post (Westerly, Mass.) finished 22nd with a time of 3:05.44.

Junior TyLynn Graham (North Attleboro, Mass.) placed 23rd in the long jump with a leap of 14-07.75.

The event concludes on Saturday, March 1.
