AMHERST, Mass. -- Despite chilly conditions and intermittent periods of rain, Rhode Island sits in first place after the first day of competition at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship, held at the Track & Field Complex on the campus of the University of Massachusetts.

After eight events, the Rams have a total of 53.5 points, while Dayton is second with 51.5 points. Two-time defending champion Charlotte is third with 47 points, followed by Massachusetts (29) and La Salle (29), Temple (25), Richmond (23), Duquesne (17.5), Xavier (13), Saint Louis (9.5), Saint Joseph's (eight) and Fordham (six).

Three Rams captured individual events on day one. Senior Jasmine Jennings set a new URI and A-10 championship record in the hammer throw, registering a winning throw of 202-01. Her mark shattered the previous record of 179-06, set by URI's Michelle Fournier in 1997. Jennings just edged out teammate Sarah Thornton, who set a new personal-best of 198-06. Crystal Bourque was fourth (50.75m/166-06).

Earlier in the day, Thornton became the first four-time discus champion in A-10 history, winning the event with a toss of 153-08. The winning mark came on her third and final throw, after fouling on her first two attempts.

"I took a little break, figured things out and got one out there to get into finals and then did what I needed to do," said Thornton after her discus performance. "I worked really hard all four years and am very grateful. I put a lot of dedication in and it's been fun."

TyLynn Graham won the high jump, clearing a height of 5-05 (1.65m). Two others - including URI's Shayna Daugherty - also cleared the same mark, but Graham took first place by virtue of attempts. Daugherty placed third.

Mary Najarian placed seventh in the 10,000m run, crossing the finish line in 37:36.20.

Caitlin Hurley advanced to the finals of the 100m dash, after clocking 12.56 seconds in the preliminary heat. Graham (15.29) and Lara-Jane Que (15.63) also advanced to the finals of the 110m hurdles. Ajoke Ogundolani totalled 2305 points in the first day of the heptathlon.

Action commences at 8:45am on Sunday, May 4, with the 110m hurdles in the men's decathlon, followed by the women's javelin at 9:00am.
