URI Volleyball Announces 2008 Recruiting Class
Nov. 27, 2007
KINGSTON, R.I. - University of Rhode Island volleyball coach Bob Schneck announced that Alexandria Benbrook, Lindsay Potts, Kayla Wilson, and Stacey Yohannes have each signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) and will enroll at the University of Rhode Island and compete for the volleyball team next fall. "This is a tremendous recruiting class for our program," said Schneck, who recently completed his 27th season at the helm of the Rhody volleyball program. "We were one win away from qualifying for the Atlantic 10 playoffs this season, and this recruiting class will help our program take the next step. Our goal is not simply to qualify for the tournament, but to win it. I can't wait to begin coaching these outstanding young women." Benbrook is a 6-2 middle blocker from Enid High School in Oklahoma, where she was coached by James Ward. This past season, she served as co-captain and was a First Team All-Centennial Conference and all-state selection as she guided Enid to its third-straight state tournament berth. Benbrook was also a First Team All-Tournament selection at the Broken Arrow Varsity Tournament and the Tulsa Union Varsity Invitational, as well as the recipient of the Enid High Festival MVP Award. Nicknamed `Alex,' she played for the Enid Evolution Volleyball Club for three years and was later selected to the Oklahoma Peak Performance Volleyball Club, which is coached by Greg Dewey. In the classroom, Benbrook was a member of the Principal's Honor Roll, National Honor Society, Community Service Club, and Math Club. Potts was a four-year starter at for coach Maugaret Mitcham at Douglas MacArthur High School in San Antonio, Texas. After garnering all-district honorable mention accolades in 2005, Potts was named first team all-district in 2006 and 2007 and also earned NEISD and Northside ISD All-Tournament Team honors. A two-year captain (2006 and 2007), she also earned academic all-district honors as a junior and senior and is a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Sign Language Club, and Peer Tutoring for Alternative Learning Environment students. Potts is active in the community, where she volunteers her time at Fishing Under the Bridge, an organization which helps to feed the homeless, as well as at Elf Louise, which collects, wraps and distributes holiday toys to under privileged children in San Antonio. This spring, Potts will begin her fifth season playing for the Alamo Volleyball Club in San Antonio and head coach Mike Carter.
Wilson played varsity volleyball at Marymount High School for three years, helping the school to consecutive California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Championships in 2005 (Division 4 AA) and 2006 (Division 1 A). A middle blocker on the 2006 CIF State Championship squad who played club volleyball for Sunshine 18-1 Hot Shots in 2007, Wilson was an all-league selection 2006, where she helped her team place third at the Junior Olympics 15-National Division. The previous year, she helped her squad to a second place at the 2005 AAU National Beach Volleyball Tournament (15's Division). Wilson has been a California Scholarship Federation (CSF) student each semester at Marymount and volunteers at the St. Joseph's Center, a learning center for underprivileged children. She was coached by Cari Klein at Marymount and LouAnn Selsky while playing for Sunshine. Yohannes is a five-year member and three-year captain of the volleyball team at Penfield High School (N.Y.). She played two years of club volleyball for Primo VB Club and four more for coach Jason Pariseau and VolleyFX in Rochester. Under the guidance of head coach Matt Glover, Yohannes helped Penfield to a 104-9 record, two Section V Class AAA titles, two Monroe County tournament titles, and a 2007 state runner-up finish. At the conclusion of her senior season, Yohannes was named Democrat and Chronicle's 'All-Greater Rochester Girl's Volleyball Player of the Year. Off the court, Yohannes is active in Varsity Club, an elementary mentoring program. |
